Blackberry enthusiasts will be interested to know that T-Mobile USA is
now carrying the latest Blackberry, the 8700g which includes EDGE
capability, at a subsidized price of $299.

In addition to EDGE, this version has a full HTML Web browser and
several other new features.

I thought they have been carrying this for a few months already.

No. Cingular had it as an exclusive for a short period. It just became
available at a subsidized price for T-Mobile customers.

It's been online via my.t-mobile for a month and a half already. I
ordered mine may 15th online via my.t-mobile.com. I do like it a lot
though. Sweet phone.

hmmmm...here's what I was able to find:  On April 10, T-Mobile
launched the BlackBerry 8700g in our Business channel. The device will
be available to individuals in all retail channels, as well as our
Employee Phone and Upgrade programs, beginning April 17.

I know I've had mine for a couple of months and it definitely does not
say Cingular on it.  ;-)

Hmmm. I wonder if I was looking at cached content or something?
Honestly, I've been looking for it for a while, and either I really
missed it or couldn't see it for some reason.

It does look like a sweet phone, and promises to be better than my
7290, but I'm not going to instantly upgrade, largely because the EDGE
network isn't nationwide yet.

I'm not certain what happened there but I know that it has been out
for a while.  I had the 7290 also which I love.  Talk about a great
phone.  But the 8700G beats it hands down. I tested out the MDA after
I got the 8700 and I also tested out the SKIII a month ago and I just
like the 8700 far better than either of those two as well.

The Edge capability is nice simply when I am bored in airports and
want to peruse CNN but outside of that I spend my like on the
internet...who cares.  I really like the Bluetooth on this.  Very
clear and you can get quite a ways away before the signal starts to
fade.

While it does have new ringtones I do wish it supported some better
quality ones.  I sort of miss not having a camera on it but then again
of both of those were a must-have I would have the MDA or the SKIII.
For what I do it supports me very well.  The updates to my calendar in
Outlook is done over the air.  I haven't had to do a USB sync since
I've had it.  I get my email on the BB server before I do on my
corporate server (weird).

Pure and simply it is a great phone and email device.

Does the Blackberry's email program render messages in a
monospaced font (where all characters have the same width)?
If so, then I might consider buying one.  I can't find a
decent GSM phone, so I may as well buy a Blackberry and have
email on the road.

Yes, but before you go with a Blackberry, realize that you'll pay
extra for Blackberry service, just like you would have to add data
capability to an Internet-enabled phone on top of your voice plan.

Would adding GPRS service to my existing voice account cover
it?

You have to add Blackberry Internet Service, but it's no more
expensive than regular GPRS, just a different system. Blackberry
devices rely on proprietary technology that is serviced centrally
rather than through your mobile provider alone.

That's a shame.  I can just about afford GPRS or Blackbery,
but not both.  If I have to choose between them, GPRS has
priority.  What makes this even more sad is that T-Mobile
want to charge me so much for a decent handset I could
probably buy a Blackberry for around the same price.

I like my PEBL. Have you considered looking at one?

Hello Steve,

SS> I like my PEBL. Have you considered looking at one?

I've seen them and the design appealed to me.  I know that
Motorola have had some rather severe quality assurance
problems in the past and that puts me off.  Can I buy a
serial data cable for a PEBL?  Will it work as a modem with
-out the need for proprietary software?

- Andy.
