I have heard rumors that t-mobile will be deploying a 3G data service
in the US in the next few months.  Are there any press reports or other
to confirm this?

Also, how will the speeds of such a network compare to t-mobile's
current EDGE network?

Thanks,

K

The auction for the spectrum is Aug 9th.  They have to get more
spectrum first.

I am not too sure about the jargon but Verizon Wireless and Sprint already
offer 3G here in the US. I think the term for their implementation is EV-DO
(Evolution Data Optimized) and it is capable of data download bursts upto
2.4 Mbits/sec though steady rates hover around 700 - 800 Kbits/sec. This is
pretty much above what the EDGE network can achieve.

The Verizon offering is called BroadbandAccess while the Sprint one is
called Mobile Broadband, AFAIK.  What I heard, though I could not find any
press reports to verify this, is that at least two major carriers are going
to offer Wi-Max and/or HSDPA, or something similar, data access at around 3
Mbits/sec average speed sometime in 2007. But, I repeat, this is only what I
heard. Somebody could perhaps correct me on this.
