The auction for the spectrum is Aug 9th. They have to get more
spectrum first.

I am not too sure about the jargon but Verizon Wireless and Sprint already
offer 3G here in the US. I think the term for their implementation is EV-DO
(Evolution Data Optimized) and it is capable of data download bursts upto
2.4 Mbits/sec though steady rates hover around 700 - 800 Kbits/sec. This is
pretty much above what the EDGE network can achieve.
The Verizon offering is called BroadbandAccess while the Sprint one is
called Mobile Broadband, AFAIK. What I heard, though I could not find any
press reports to verify this, is that at least two major carriers are going
to offer Wi-Max and/or HSDPA, or something similar, data access at around 3
Mbits/sec average speed sometime in 2007. But, I repeat, this is only what I
heard. Somebody could perhaps correct me on this.
