I am planning to visit the British Virgin Islands in a few weeks.  The
T-Mobile roaming rate is $2.99/min.  On the other hand incoming SMS messages
are a reasonable $0.10 each.

I would like to be able to leave my phone on so I can get SMS messages, but
I want all of my incoming calls to automatically go to voice mail.  Is there
a way to to this.  I have heard horror stories about people being charged
roaming charges if they simply don't answer incoming calls.

Just CF all your calls to go directly to VM. See the CF menu on your
phone.

If I do this, will I be charged roaming charges for the calls that forward
to voice mail?

I asked TMo about this very issue (but confirm for yourself) and they
said that since the call is never going out of their system you will not
be charged roaming.  If the phone rings or even if it is turned off and
it's still before midnight of the day you turned it on in a foreign
country, you will be charged for a 1 or 2 minute roaming call to you
PLUS another 1 or 2 minute roaming call back to voicemail! Yes, you can
be charged for up to 4 minutes at $2.99/min for a call that goes to VM
(it's typically 2 minutes though).
SO, be sure to forward immediately B4 you Go!

Mike,
Unconditionally forward all incoming calls to the Voicemail number.
Somewhere in your phone's menus there is a setting for "forward all calls."
Just set that to the +1805MESSAGE number.  You can also change your greeting
to ask people to page you rather than leaving a voicemail. You can call the
vociemail number from any phone and pick up any messages that are left.
