Does a prepaid account require a special phone to roam?  Will any GSM
850/1900 unlocked phone work?

No, roaming is controlled by the carriers via the SIM card.

If you want to call abroad and want to avoid expensive roaming check

Nice spam completely off-topic to the thread (850/1900 implies DOMESTIC
roaming, or does your SIM magically make 850/1900 phones work overseas?)
