I live in a GSM dead spot (1-2 bars in summer), and the issue exists
with both T-Mobile and Cingular. Does anyone know of another company
that doesn't use it?
T-Mo keeps wanting me to troubleshoot the phone itself, When I tell
them that the problem occurs on several phones, they still want to
troubleshoot the pnone itself (ARGHH!)

Don't forget the local and regional carriers. Check with the telecom and you
might find they also offer service.

Verizon, Sprint, Nextel.
A best bet would be to find a friend who has one of them and see what
signal they get in your house.
