GPRS woes on I-80/90

My win98/laptop/p280 t-mobile internet access worked well in Cambridge
MA on Aug17.

On 18 in Ithaca NY it had slowed. On aug 19 in Ithaca NY it had slowed
to the point of taking 38 min to transfer 12 kb. This situation
persisted all week across the I-80/90 corridor to Ames, IA where I am
today.

I spent a LOT of time on the phone with tech support. My phone is
currently configured to directly access the GPRS network. I got the
USA configuration parameters from tier 3 tech support:

Init String = at+cdgcont=1,"IP","internet2.voicestream.com"
Dial number = *99***1#

The basic problem appears to be extremely slow network response. Ping
round trip times average 6.5 seconds with a minimum of about 5
seconds. It does not appear to depend on signal strength or time of
day.

This results in "Page not found" errors etc.

Wireless data tech support has been unable to tell me if anyone or
everyone is experiencing this problem. Higher levels of Wireless data
support are out of the US and they don't know the status of the US
network either.

Is anyone on the Chicago-Boston axis experiencing good performance?

I just came back ftom a trip to Rockford Ill (N of Chicago) and had no
trouble. I use a laptop with a Sierra 750 card and Propel accelerator.
My settings are
Init String = +cdgcont=1,,"internet2.voicestream.com"
Dial number = *99#

Frankjg,

I think they have the troubles cleared up from last week and earlier that started this thread.  Most of us that had trouble back then are working pretty good now.

My problems are now due to my Motorola P280 handset. When having
troubles with it last week I fooled with setting I could.

Now I find that my internet access is just fine with my sim card in my
wife's v60! This means my P280 is screwed up (5900 ms ping times). I
did a complete reset of the phone but it didn't help.

I'll try once more before switching handsets.
