T-Mobile data problems

I currently use a T610 and have unlimited data service with VPN.  Right
now, I've been having a lot of problems using my phone with my iMac to
surf the web (which is exactly what I'm doing now).

First, the connection seems to drop if left idle for around 1min (not
always exactly a minute, but close).  This is a real pain when I'm
reading a web page (oops, it just dropped now) or composing a message,
etc.  Is there some setting I can use to prevent this?
My connection will also drop when a download is hanging for a little
while.

The second, and more annoying problem, is that after I connect, the
browser will say that it is waiting for the website to respond and
NOTHING will happen.  I have to dial over and over, restart the phone,
restart the web browser, etc. to get it to finally work.  This really is
unacceptable... I probably should've cancelled my service with T-Mobile,
but no one else offers a reasonable data plan right now, so I'll suffer.

I called tech support and they had me change my dial number from *99# to
*99***2#, where 2 is my CID.  When using the second number, it looks
like my requests are being routed through a proxy which is supposed to
give me faster service... quite the opposite.  Many times I'll hang
waiting for the damn proxy to respond.
Many times killing a session and restarting it with *99***2# must
confuse things as I don't get a connection to the proxy.  Redialing with
*99# sometimes fixes that, otherwise restarting the browser helps (after
20 attempts).

Since tech supp seems to be out of ideas, does anyone here have any tips
that might be useful?

One last thing, I noticed that when I went to Chicago for the day, my
data service was much faster and less likely to be plaqued by these
problems.  Could it just be that the Milwaukee area's infrastructure
sucks (much like the Brewers, Bucks, etc... haha).

Thanks,
Curt

I have no answer.  But I'd be willing to bet it's Milwaukee.  T-Mo is
a patchwork of different systems, bought up and linked together.
Someone must know if Milwaukee is on the same system as Chicago.  But
in general, T-Mo customers in one area could have entirely different
problems than those in another.  I'm on T-Mo too in CA, but we're on
Cingular's towers out here.  What that means about the underlying
network I don't know, but my GPRS is very stable.

Sorry, I've never seen anything like that before.
For help, I always go to the T-Mobile kiosk at Mayfair Mall (near the
Apple Store) first.  There are a couple of guys there that are pretty
knowledgable and might be able to help.
