I just ordered the 6610 from T-Mobile for $35 + tax and a free 3595.
My wife and I have been on the family plan since March, 2001. We're both
still using the original phones. I called to see if I could upgrade the
phones, thinking I wanted the 6610 and was disappointed that others pointed
out the $35 offer had ended.
The customer rep read off the list of phones available (below) and their
prices. I asked about the 6610 and was told it was $150. She mentioned some
others and I said "I was really hoping to get the 6610 but that's kind of
steep." She said that was the best price she could offer, but there was
"another department that works with customers who may choose to leave that
can definitely get you a lower price."
She very nicely offered to transfer me and put me on hold. When the other
rep answered, she had been briefed by the original rep and no repeat was
necessary from me. Very friendly and said I could get the 6610 for $35 + tax
with a one year renewal on my line. I asked if I could still get the 3595
for free with that price and she said no problem as long as that line is
also kept for another year. I agreed and they are both being put in the mail
today.
I don't know if we got this offer because we've been customers for so long
without asking for upgrades and never coming close to using all of our
minutes, but I just thought I'd share this experience with everyone. I'm not
a confrontational person and would not have "insisted" or "threatened" or
anything. I just asked what they had available and they told me the options.
The original rep quoted the following phones/prices:
3595 free
R225 free
V66 for $50
T300 for $50
X105 for $100
S105 for $150
6610 for $150

Those are prices based on _your_ tenure and the revenue _your_ account
has generated through the course of the years. Factor in the fact
that you have not requested an upgrade in the last year and you get
those prices. Every person calling in will get something different.

The other "department" is the cancelation department people are normally
only transferred to when they ask/threaten to cancel. You got a nice rep
that transferred you without going through the whole "game."

Now that's smart customer service.
