The most economical way is to call up T-Mobile, tell them you want the
free data plan, and they'll give you unlimited GPRS for web and E-Mail
as part of your plan for free.
The $19.99 plan is only needed if you want to access FTP, SSH, or
other services.
In terms of minutes, GPRS is entirely separate from minutes. You can
use your phone to dial up an ordinary ISP, using your minuntes, but
it'll be slower.

I spent nearly 25 minutes waiting and then talking to two reps: (1) gladly
added "free internet" to my plan but knew nothing when I asked her about
settings for my phone, and transferred me to #2; (2) said that in order to
use my phone as modem for the laptop, I need to buy $19.99 plan. When I told
her about my free internet, which was added 15 minutes ago, she said it
"gives you free access to download ringtones, for which you'll still be
charged 99 cents/each." When I asked her to confirm that the meaning of what
she said was: "I was given a free opportunity to spend money" she said
"Exactly!"
Sounds a bit idiotic to me...

How so? It seems to me that the free wap wasn't meant to provide you with
unlimited internet for free. Unlimited internet access is an add-on service
that has value to many people, so why shouldn't they charge $20 for it?
Compare to their competitors who charge closer to $80 for unlimited data.
The fact that people have been able to use it for internet access just means
its probably a loophole they haven't gotten around closing yet. And of
course they're not going to officially say "use the free wap", they want you
to pay for a service you're getting.
As for your "I was given a free opportunity to spend money" quote, yes,
that's exactly right. Just like how every store in the world allows you
free admittance into their store so that you can buy their stuff. Free wap
was simply to allow you to buy their ringers.

This is what I did, and I used the data connection for internet, sending
pictures from my phone via my non-voicestream e-mail account, connecting my
laptop, all in all transferring many megabytes of data - ALL FOR FREE!!!
So far it works fine, thank you.
