I'm currently a T-Mobil customer with an expired contract. If I sign up for
another year & get a new phone (v66) is it possible to switch the sim card
back to my old & use my old phone occasionally as a backup?

Absolutely. Any phone in working condition will be able to be used.
That's one of the beauties of GSM. As long as it's charged up, it'll
be ready to go.

WOW!
I had thought the ESN or whatever phone identifier went with the phone, not
the card. Assuming this is true, it's a terrific advantage and makes my
decision easier. I was considering a switch just for a T610/616 Bluetooth
phone (T608 not yet available for Sprint), and now will also buy some
non-Bluetooth GSM klunker on eBay as a "backup".

Not only that but your phone numbers are saved on the SIM too.

Not necessarily if the phone is locked to a different carrier say Cingular
or AT&T.
But you can always use an old T-Mobile's phone anytime, just buy
transferring your sim-card to the phone.

Yes, but It is my experience that the v66 is a rather delicate little phone
(but still really cool).
Hard to beat for size, and reception is good. If you have never had a phone
break, maybe it will work out. Otherwise I would give at least some brief
consideration to another model.

Thanks. After reading a lot of the same comments on cnet I came to exact
same conclusion this afternoon. <<lots of other negatives also>>
