GPRS vs. EDGE download speeds

I am using T-Zones a LOT, with my RAZR V3 for checking YahooMail, do Google
Search, read BBC, news, etc.  I am looking for faster speed. I have no need
full Internet access on my phone.

I am grandfathered in with the old $2.99/mo unlimited T-Zones plan so I
don't want to jump ship to Cingular to have 3G access.

My only option is EDGE which unfortunately is not offered by RAZR V3

I am planning to get an unlocked RAZR V3xx or a Nokia 6133 since both have
EDGE feature.  In theory, EDGE supposed to be up to three times faster tan
GPRS.

I have two questions:

1.  Is the higher download speed noticeable enough to justify the upgrade
to an EDGE phone?
2.  Would an unlocked Cingular RAZR V3xx phone's EDGE function work on
T-Mobile's network?

If any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Les

Yes to both. I recently upgraded to a v6 Maxx and the speed is about twice
as fast or better.  Once you install the settings the EDGE will work fine.
Even though the phone is unlocked you may have to do some editing to get
access to the Web Sessions menu. You would be better off with an unbranded
version which are readily available from a number of sellers on ebay.

That is great news, than you for the information.  I will get an unbranded,
unlocked RAZR.

I will need to look up the difference between a RZRZ V6 Maxx and a RAZR V3xx
model.  I will look for the V6 since it is working for you.

Are these the configuration settings you referred to:

  -Primary IP address:  216.155.165.050
  -Secondary IP address:  Blank
  -APN Name:  wap.voicestream.com
  -Data Bearer:  GPRS
  -Profile Name:  GPRS
  -Username:  Blank
  -Bearer:  Data

Thanks again.

Yes, EDGE is faster. But if you try EVDO, you will throw EDGE in the garbage

EDGE is comparable in speed to 1xRTT, if you're comparing GSM data to
CDMA data. HDSPA is supposed to compete with 1xEVDO.

Thank you both.

As I understand, T-Mobile is planning to introduce 3G sometimes this year.
In the meantime I wanted the second best thing, EDGE.

I don't want to switch to Cingular/AT&T because I am otherwise happy with
T-Mobile and the cost is much lower than the other cell phone companies.  I
want to stick to GMS. I travel often to Europe so I could not use Verizon,
Sprint, Alltel, Nextel etc.

That's why I picked T-Mo as well. I feel right at home with it in most
of EU. Even in BP. ;-)
