I can see you guys are into technical stuff that I have no clue about.
I'll try not to rant, lest I get slapped.

I just changed from cingular to t-mobile. The roaming charges hurt on
a recent trip. I knew I was going to miss my old phone.
A nokia 5160.   In its case I could grab it easily the weight wasn't a
factor. Could drop it, kick it around & it worked great.
I miss it.

I work construction, & have many friends that share my feelings.

I'm looking for a phone I can get my hands on, actually grab
comfortably, that isn't like holding a credit card by the edges.
Something that has a bit of weight, a no frills durable phone.
No photos, web, text, msg, with buttons a man with fat fingers can
manuver.

Ideas?

I've got some beeft fingers and I don't have much trouble at all with my
no-frills Samsung T209.

Amen, brother!!

I would like one with big enough numbers for my fingers AND big
enough that I don't need to put on my reading glasses to see the
screen and numbers.

I keep looking for a good "candy bar" phone.  It would be nice if
the screen had a sliding cover to protect it.

Something like the Nokia 5190 would work for you, if you can still
find one. That phone has been out of production for several years and
won't get you 850 mHz roaming capacity in the U.S. or the ability to
roam abroad, but it might be an option for you if you can find someone
who has one lying around.

How about .... a Nokia 5190? Or, even better, a 6190?

Same form-factor as your old 5160, same batteries, same
cases, same optional stuffs, etc etc

Ebay price around maybe five bucks? Shipping will probably
cost more than the phone.

The nice thing about GSM (T-mobile uses GSM) is that
everything you need is in that little tiny SIM card. Just
move it into whatever phone/PDA/whatever you want.

Obviously, the phone you want to use either needs to be
unlocked, or, if locked, be on the carrier you want to use.

...and along the same lines: I assume that you ended your Cingular
relationship on good terms and still have your old phone somewhere, so why
not get an unlock code for the 5160?  I too switched from Cingular to
T-Mobile (after making the mistake of switching from T-Mobile to Cingular).
I liked my Cingular phone, but wasn't happy with the customer service.  It
took several days for them to e-mail the unlock code and several phone calls
to get the correct instructions to put in the code (the delay wasn't because
I was no longer subscribed; the customer service was just as unknowledgeable
when I was a paying customer).  After that, my T-Mobile SIM worked in my
Cingular phone without a problem and I continue to use my Cingular branded
phone that says "T-Mobile" as the connected service.

The 5160 isn't a GSM phone, it's a TDMA phone used on Cingular's legacy
TDMA network, that they just kicked their customers off of last month.
Those who didn't convert to GSM service were shown the door.

That would certainly Be an option if the OP had had GSM service from
Cingular.

My advice to the OP is to take the "free" phone he's most comfortable
with when signing up, (try the Noka 6030- it's a bit small but it's a
good phone and can reuse the home/car chargers from the 5160) and if he
doesn't like it, go with the $5-$10 Nokia 5190 or 6190 on eBay like
others have suggested.

I think I might still have a T-Mobile branded 5190 (the GSM equivalent of the
TDMA 5160) tucked away in a closet somewhere, and I probably still have the
charger. It was my mother-in-law's when she was on my family plan, and it got
very little use. To the best of my knowledge, it works fine. If you're
interested, I'll slip my sim into it to make sure it does work, and you can
have it for the cost of shipping. Let me know, either here or via e-mail.

Thanks to everyone that's responded.
Lots of ideas.
For the near future, I'll keep this POS little flip phone that was no
doubt designed to die (in my environment) to last
months, rather than years.
I'll be passing this thread on to friends as well.

Again thanks,
