Switching from postpaid to prepaid, how long does it take?

I called T-Mobile customer service yesterday and requested
they terminate my postpaid plan and replace it with a prepaid
plan (T-Mobile To Go). I was told my phone would not work
for 24 hours. So far it's been 26 hours and all that the phone
shows is "Unregistered SIM". This same phone (Moto RAZR V3)
worked fine on postpaid yesterday, and I was assured I could
continue to use it on prepaid.
Anyone gone this route before?

Sounds like some thing fell through the cracks. Are you sure you don't
need to get a new SIM?

Actually you absolutely DO need to get a new SIM.  T-Mobile issues
different SIMs for prepaid vs postpaid accounts and they don't "cross
them over"..

I changed both my phones to prepaid and didn't have to change my sims. Give
them a call back.

This is completely false.  T-Mobile does not have different SIMs for
postpaid and pre-paid.  I would definately call them back to make sure the
SIM maintenance has been completed.  Sometimes they get behind.

I did call back. The CSR said it sounded like the SIM had been
destroyed during the switchover from postpaid to prepaid. I was
advised to go to the nearest T-Mobile store and get a new SIM,
which I did. All is well now, and the CSR said they would give
me a credit for the $20 the new SIM cost me.
