> Does subscribing to MyFaves really need a MyFaves phone??
Yes and no. Technologically, no, but T-Mo demands to do to get the
service. As long as you can convince them that you already have one you
can have the plan.
> This would seem like a billing thing to me (i.e. don't bill for myfaves
> numbers)?? Am I missing something??
No, it's a billing thing, but the MyFaves software helps avoid
misunderstandings, since it always displays the actual five numbers T-Mo
has on record as your faves, without you, perhaps, forgetting you
replaced Jim with Ted and making 400 minutes of calls to Jim, etc.

True. However, if the $$$ bothers you, pickup a $30 Nokia 6030 T-Mo
prepaid phone at Walmart or Target. It's a Faves phone.
> If I setup the 5 myfaves phone numbers on the website, then why do I need
> any functionality from the phones?
You don't. However, the plan is T-Mo's game. As they say on the
playground: their ball, their rules.
> This seems like it is a "billing" issue on their side and I guess I'm just

Two reasons: first, for misunderstandings, like I said above (i.e. you
call your wife's non-faves work number instead of faves mobile number and
chat for 150 minutes.) Secondly, (IMHO) it preserves the illusion that
the whole my faves nonsense is somehow a bit of "T-Mobile Magic" rather
than just a plan gimmick like "rollover minutes." Everyone whirling
those faves icons around on their phone is a conversation starter, and
therefore free advertising for the plan.
I signed up for a MyFaves family plan a few months ago. The rep let me
skate by without a MyFaves phone. (I bought a new phone for my wife, and
he let me on the plan without upgrading my phone if I "promised" to get
one "soon.")

Does that mean, for example, if I took my SIM from the phone I use with
MyFaves and put it in to another TMO phone that is supposedly not
MyFaves compatible that it will work? if so, how well (in other words,
is it seamless...would I get the little wheel thingy with the pictures,
etc.?)

Will one of those work with a non-pre-paid SIM card?

I think I am drawing the conclusion that when you say MyFaves will work
on a non-MyFaves phone, you mean in terms of the call billing itself and
not the software on the phone?

Heh.
Thanks for your input, as I've wondered about this stuff myself.

From a billing standpoint, yes- calls to your five faves will still be
free.

No- the MyFaves software has to be on the phone to get the "wheel."

Correct.

My pleasure...

I'm not the OP, but I want to thank you, Todd, for a clearly written and easy
to understand response to another poster's question that's also been on my
mind since MyFaves came about.

I'm confused. How can Faves work with a prepaid plan?

It doesn't -- That gets you the MyFaves *phone*, then you can sign up
for the MyFaves *plan& if you so desire.

> I'm confused. How can Faves work with a prepaid plan?
It doesn't- the MyFaves software lies dormant in MyFaves phones unless it
detects some flag on the SIM that tells it you've got a MyFaves plan.
Whwn I stick my contract SIM in the 6030 the MyFaves "wheel" pops up.
When I stick my prepaid SIM in, it disappears.
The MyFaves phones are easily identified by a logo (colored dots in a
wheel pattern) on the back of the phone. The prepaid 6030s are identical
to the contract units.

I'm pretty sure my BB Pearl didn't have the MyFaves software when I bought
it, but they were able to update it over the air once I got the service,
so I guess if you have a compatible phone, even if it was released
pre-MyFaces, it would work (if that's even true, I would imagine there
aren't a lot that fit that description).

I like it! it makes more sense than "MyFaves" especially if you have a
MyFaves phone and can see "Your Faces" in the little wheel. (I don't, but I
still like the concept.)

Heh. Sometimes a typo can be a good thing, I guess.

The Pearl had the software already. As I said, it simply lies dormant
until you activate a MyFaves plan. Same with my wife's Dash- if I stick
a prepaid SIM in it, all traces of the MyFaves app disappear until you
put her regular SIM back in.
> Does subscribing to MyFaves really need a MyFaves phone??
No, in fact if you want to get around that requirement find a friend who has
a myfaves phone, put your SIM in it, call in and sign up for the service and
when you can see that it's set up put the SIM back in your phone and
configure your 5 with the my.t-mobile.com site.
Personally I think requiring an upgrade to take advantage of that is asinine,
but it's their network...
Now last I heard I think you lose your unlimited M2M (if you have it on your
account) when you switch to a MyFaves. You'll have to ask about that when you
call.

Like with a lot of T-Mobile features, you can probably go to the My T-Mobile
web site and change your phone online to a MyFaves compatible phone, add
MyFaves online, and then change your phone back.
