TMO fully blocking other ports?

Looks to me like TMO is now fully blocking everything I was once able to
access with just a grandfathered T-Zones account. When I got back from the
UK, email no longer works and I had to go back to just using wap which
kind of sux. I guess the force to the full data plan is on.

Anyone else have any contrary news?

I used to have just t-zones which worked fine with Opera Mini and Google
Maps.  In order to serve me better, t-mobile decided to block those apps
as well without the full data plans.  Explaining that paying $15 for
each use of Google maps (I would use it about twice a month) didn't cut
it got no sympathy and so now t-mobile has had this users ARPU drop by
$6 a month.

Still works in Hawaii.

This is an area where TM would have been better served from
everybody's standpoint by keeping a consistent policy. I can see both
sides' point of view here and know that the reversal was probably
driven in part by abuse. But they should have been consistent in both
policy and technical implementation from the get go and they wouldn't
have aggravated people.

I did mention to the customer agent that it all worked fine during my
trial period, and he explained that is why they have it.  He never could
understand that you don't then break what worked in the trial period!

The problem they have is as we discussed with text messages before in
this group.  For various features such as data and SMS there are people
who are "light" users and "heavy" users.  The attempts at segregating
those users and charging appropriately haven't been working too well.

IMHO they would do best by making a small amount of everything be
included in the plans (eg 10 text messages a month, 30 mins of data
usage).  The reason for that is that charging extra for even one message
or one byte of data results in customer service calls that will more
than wipe out any profit made.  It also gives people an incentive to try
them out.  Then have a tier around the $5 per month level for light
usage and finally a tier for heavy users at $20 or whatever it was, but
charge people based on their usage for the month.  That way if you used
lots of text messages/data you'll pay more but it will have been worth
it to you.  I believe some carriers already do this for voice minutes.
And the beauty of a scheme like this is that automatically segregates
the users and even does the right thing as usage changes month by month.
Instead the carriers are just driving people to wifi and voip.

We really don't know if this is a new policy or a local outage. Anybody
else find this change? Everything is still working the same in Honolulu.

It makes sense though, since (at least in the advertising I read), it
should never have been available in the first place.

If quitters never win, and winners never quit,
what fool came up with, "Quit while you're ahead"?

I'm not sure what you mean, but my situation is this: with the plain T-Zones
account, I can go to e-mail and download IMAP and POP3 messages from a couple
of accounts and can reply or create new messages.

It's so cumbersome on my phone I don't usually bother to use it (but in a
pinch when I'm expecting a message, it comes in handy.)

Kinda' like typing in SMS text. I would only use it if all else fails.

That's I mean. It doesn't work on my phone anymore (SDA) with T-Zones.

Well, so far it still works here......... If anything changes, I'll post
back, even though, as I said, I don't use it all that much.

But I'll be more mindful of it in the next weeks/months, to see if anything
changes.

T-Mo is closing ports from West to East, it seems.  They locked the West
coast (including Denver, where I live) back in April or May.  I've been
traveling this month, and noticed all ports are still open in Chicago,
Washington (DC), New England and New York.

Even with the port closings, some phones can be configured for Opera Mini
and Google Maps to work.  My Windows Mobile phones have no problems in
this regard.

Nobody's further west than I am (Hawaii) and it still works here.

UPDATE: As a test, I put wap.voicestream.com into the "The Internet"
connection and now POP3 /SMTP email is working again. TMO is still mucking
with Google services though.

opera mini on a motorola V3 RAZR and the $5.99 tzones, albeit slowly.
