does anyone know what  code I need to use to  phone/ text  New York from
Uk  on  3g vodafone

If you're going to text someone in the US then +1 followed by the 10
digit phone number. New York will probably be area code 212

So +1 212 xxx xxxx

On my phone, I have to hold the 0 down for 2-3 seconds to get a +

AFAIK, 212 has never been allocated to any mobile phone in NYC. If
it's a mobile, it will most likely be 917, 646 or 347. Older numbers
will use the former ac and newer ones, the latter two.

You're right in most instances but there are quite a few 212 (and 718)
mobile phone area codes still around here in NYC.

Now that you mention it, you're right about 718. But I've never seen a
212 mobile in all my years in NYC.

I know of at least 3. I have one friend whose mobile is a 212 area code and
landline is a 347... drives me nuts.
