I wondered if all this about Orange losing the plot was for real, but it
seems it really is for real.
I'm shortly due to go to the United Arab Emirates with work for several
weeks, so my tariff with inclusive minutes is no use. According to
Orange's website the rate for that on my tariff would be £1.30 a minute
outgoing, and 80p incoming.
There is then a mention on the page of different rates for the High
Speed Data tariff. I click the link
http://www.orange.co.uk/business/corporate/phones/international.html
and see that that would be much better - only 50p incoming, 95p outgoing
and 55p inside the country. Perfect.
So I phoned up 150 to change tariff, and explained it was as I am due to
go to the UAE. Fine, he says, you can change to that tariff, but you
won't be charged at the tariff's rate, as I'm a human not a business, so
the old 130/80p applies.
I didn't quite believe it, but he insisted, as they did again when I
phoned.
It seems the that it is better for me to get a virgin sim, and use that
whilst in Dubai. That only charges £1 to make a call and 50p incoming.
I explained that to the clown on the end of the phone, but he says "well
take a virgin phone instead". I'm stunned.

Why are you stunned?
The OCS rep is absolutely correct.

The international section on orange's website tells you the rates are
different for HSD tariff. Ocs say they are not. They say different
things, and nowhere that I can see does it say it's different for
humans.

Perhaps so, but that does not deter from the fact that you could just get a
VM sim

Be sure to have full roaming with Direct Debit added to the Virgin Sim,
or you'll get charged the even higher PAYT Roaming rates!

You need to look closer. I found this:
http://www.orange.co.uk/business/corporate/phones/international.html
by clicking 'coverage and calling abroad' > 'calling whilst abroad' >
'shoe me how much calling costs when abroad > 'orange high speed data
plan' form drop down menu titled "Business Service Plans"
It clearly states that these rates are for business customers only.

But on the ordinary international page it blanket says the High Speed
Data tariff users should go to that page instead.

The website is correct, that charging differentiates on the basis of
talkplan rather than account type.

Out of interest why not just say to orange that your a business (self
employed)
And the question is how easy is this? is there any other benifit (I do have
a personal phone which I sort of use for business use).

I left Orange Retail 18 months ago now, and have minimal dealings with
Registrations, so I'm not 100% sure on this point. However, I suspect you
probably need to supply Company Registration numbers or some such.

http://www.orange.co.uk/business/small/ and
http://www.orange.co.uk/business/corporate/ are your friends here, I
suspect. I had thought that Corporate took over once an account went over
100 phones, but the website seems to think 50 is the cut-off.
The main differentials seem to be inclusive Care for the first year, access
to 345 (Small Business) or 158 (Corporate) as your CS instead of 150, and
sometimes free voicemail.
However, this is one for the people in sales really.

Well, I've made the change now, and see what happens. If nothing else
saying you are going to UAE with work lets you change to the HSD tariff
with relative ease <G>

We'll look forward to seeing you on CNN dressed in orange with
some nice men with beards holding AK47s standing behind you,
demanding a ransom they won't get.
Some people will do anything for their 15 minutes of fame ;-)

Yeah, the same thought has occurred to me, also. Even better work's
travel insurance doesn't cover anything like that happening. Great, eh?

Fingers crossed it won't come to that.

Get caught nicking anything, and they won't leave you any fingers to cross ;-)

There are many things that could easily land me in a prison without even
particularly trying!
