Which operators give PAYG GPRS with *full internet* and roaming?

Hi,

I've tried looking through the newsgroup but nobody seems to be quite
sure which operators offer full GPRS Internet on a PAYG sim.

As far as I can tell Vodafone and Orange do, o2 doesn't but some
people have said it works even when roaming, and I don't know about
T-Mobile.

What I'm actually looking for is a PAYG sim with full Internet roaming
GPRS, with a reasonable cost.

Is this possible?

Cheers,
dave

Your impression is incorrect.

>As far as I can tell Vodafone and Orange do, o2 doesn't but some

>T-Mobile.

So you have discovered that two of them do, one does not mostly, and
you don't know about the fourth. That's not what you said in the
preceding paragraph.

Possible, yes. Probable, no. The mobile networks are determined to
recoup the ridiculous price they paid for 3G licences, and s they hike
up all charges as high as the market will bear.

I'm not sure what you mean by "full Internet roaming GPRS". Do you
mean internet access by GPRS when roaming?

If you're bothered about the per-megabyte charge, your best bet is
probably the Orange mobile Office card on the PAYC tariff: no line
rental, and either 3G or GPRS at £2.35 per megabyte.

You can get 4 megabyte per month for £4 on Orange PAYG if you subscribe
to Orange World Access 4, see:-

http://www.orange.co.uk/services/orange_gprs.html

It works fine for full internet access.  I'm using an Ericsson R520m and
a laptop with a bluetooth USB dongle.

I've got cheap PAYG sims on their way from each network now, seems to
be the best way.

Thanks for the replies.

Orange definitely give full web access on PAYG OWA GPRS. I've got a
connection up and working now, used it for ssh (port 22) http
(obviously) IRC (6997) and AIM (5190?) from my zaurus, really stable,
not the best latency in the world.

A little thing to note is that Orange (and I hear T mobile) ignore LCP
echo requests, presumably to stop people idling, but it's really thick
because what time you idle out after is entirely OS dependent. For me
it was 2.1 minutes until I edited /etc/ppp/options to forget about it
and now it's forever ;).

I've just received an Orange SIM and yes it does work, even abroad and
(currently) at the same cost as using GPRS in the UK. Orange say it
doesn't work abroad at all...

The Tesco Sim (Which is O2) costs a tenner in any Tesco store and GPRS
has been free!!! For UK use and Roaming since I got the sim earlier this
year. Tesco customer services did say months ago that they did not know
how long it would be free for or if they would start charging at all.

But, does it permit full internet access or only WAP?

Only Wap Browsing as far as I am aware, although I have never asked
about or attempted to use the phone for data transfer etc. -  but it's
still a very good deal

Does it give full Internet access and is it still free? The Tesco web
site only mentions WAP via GPRS which is apparently going to be
charged at GBP4 per MB from 1/9/04.

I'll have a look at the website, but I was using WAP for the footy
results yesterday and it didn't eat up any of my credit.

Isn't Tesco a virtual operator using O2? Are O2 currently charging for
WAP over GPRS?

How would I be able to get that Mobile Office PAYC service?

I can only find the monthly rental Mobile Office tariffs on Orange's web
site.

Ask Orange?

Their web site is famous for its accuracy and completeness.

Unfortunately, not famous for high levels of these attributes.

The good news is that the PAYC tariff is on there, but you have to
click to order the thing before you get to see it. Persevere a while,
and you'll find it. The way their site is done makes giving a URL
seemingly impossible.
