Treo on non-Orange network?

OK, so I think I'll be wanting the Treo 650 when it comes out. But
Orange reception is non-existant in our street, so I'd have to buy it
outright and use it on another network.

Having played with the Treo 600 on Orange, I noticed that there was
loads of Orange-specific software on it (which I didn't look at). If I
bought the Treo off the shelf I'd not get this software, but is that any
great loss? What's the software for, is it any good, and are there
(better?) third party alternatives?

Couriers have finally picked up my iBook! Hurrah! It only took five
phonecalls to Apple, six calls to courier company, five delivery
attempts, two (different) wrong addresses and one pissed-off customer.

The Orange-specific Treo 600 software is just a little bit of cosmetic
renaming and a backup and restore program. This costs you a LOT of money as
your data is backed up over GPRS.

I use a free Backup program which backs up to the SD or MMC card instead :)

The Treo 600 can be unlcked for free at www.mytreo.net

Oh, so it's the same stuff as comes with a Treo direct from Palm then,
but with Orange-style icons?

Oooh, cheeky way of making extra profit.

Free? Which one is that then?

The free backup program I use is BackupBuddyVFS.

As there are 100,000 apps for the Treo, you might find several other backup
programs you prefer.

Ah, that's no longer free. Have you done a test restore? I find it
doesn't work with my particular setup (problems with Fonts4OS5).

Oh, I've tried a few - been a PalmOS user for years and years now.

It's now got its own blog! http://ibooksaga.blogspot.com/
And I've had (relatively) good news from Apple!
