It's about £4 per megabyte - that's what my Voda PAYG rate is, but I
agree the Voda website is terrible.

(Disclaimer, I work for Vodafone, so my advice isn't unbiased!)
Go to the website, online store -> view price plans -> PAYT
GPRS (Non live! pages) 0.73p per KB ~= £7.50 per MB (inclusive of VAT)
> b/ what/where are the price plans for data only ?
IIRC It's around £2.50 if you buy a 2.5g or 3g datacard on contract.
Only the 2.5g mobile connect card is available for PAYT at the momemt.
Online Store -> Buy 3G Mobile Connect -> GPRS Mobile Connect. That will
give you contract prices for the Data Card.
If you want PAYT go to
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00023GNKG/qid=1101806976/ref=sr_8_xs_a
p_i7_xgl/202-5177339-8324606
Which lists the price as being £4 per MB.
And, unlike some providers, 1MB means 1024KB.

only tarrif to go with PAYT voice calls ?

Not my area of expertise... pop into a Vodafone store and they should be
able to tell you what tarriff / packs are suitable for data use.
