http://gmail.google.com/gmail/help/about.html
As part of Google's mission to organize the world's information and make it
universally accessible and useful, we're testing an email service called
Gmail.

Gmail is a free, search-based webmail service that includes 1,000 megabytes
(1 gigabyte) of storage. The backbone of Gmail is a powerful Google search
engine that quickly finds any message an account owner has ever sent or
received. That means there's no need to file messages in order to find them
again.

When Gmail displays an email, it automatically shows all the replies to that
email as well, so users can view a message in the context of a conversation.
There are no pop-ups or untargeted banner ads in Gmail, which places
relevant text ads and links to related web pages adjacent to email messages.

Yes - it's to limit the number of signups, and make it a more exclusive
"club". When it first launched, people who managed to get a gmail
address used it as a badge of honour - a geek credential.

Of course, you have to be happy that Google really are the good guys,
and the privacy issues that revolve around them holding 1GB of your
personal stuff with the right to scan through it isn't a bad thing.

Personally, I'll never take a gmail account. But then, I also don't need
one as I run my own mail servers and webmail, so no limits on usage and
no nosey company trawling through my mails to work out my habits and
target advertising at me.

Google reached their personal top of the mountain about 5 months ago. I
gaurantee it'll be all downhill soon; of course it'll take a while to switch
to other engines. You'll see what I mean when we (myself being a part of
this) finish creating open source engines for use by Microsoft, Sun, and
other companies.

As a search engine, maybe. Too many kelkoo-type results in Google
nowadays.

However, when their library archives go online...

The interface is very impressive tho, the spell-check is great. Shows
what be done using HTML and Javascript. Works in both Mozilla and IE
(even Safari!). I'm not worried about Google's computers seeing my
email. I'm sure you could the same about Hotmail, only anyone with a
GCSE in ICT could probably see your mail if they put their mind to it!

Maybe I'm overly sensitive, but I care more about my privacy than
whizbang features. Obviously email is in no way secure and can be
eavesdropped by the powers that be, but I'd still rather not leave my
whole online life archived on someone else's machine.

I don't use hotmail either :-) I have my own mailservers in and out, my
own secured webmail for when I really need it, though normally I'll
tunnel over SSH.

The one thing which I really like about using Gmail is the spam filter.  It
is without doubt the best I have ever used and gets everything everytime.

I gave mine away due to the inherent security issues that seem to be
dogging Google of late.
