Need a certain kind of mobile 'phone (cheap)

Hi all,

I'm looking to change my 'phone, but don't really know which one I want.  I
currently have a Nokia n-gage, but now I'm looking for a 'normal' shape
'phone.

I'd like one with :
mp3 player (with the option to use mp3s as ringtones)
radio
triband or quadband (whatever works in the US), but that's not too
important.

I like the Samsung D500, but it doesn't have a radio, but I might give that
up to have this 'phone.  I've seen it for £4.99 per month (cashback), which
doesn't seem too bad.

Does anyone know of any other 'phone that fits the above with a decent
price?

I'm currently on Orange OVP, where they take the money by direct debit every
month rather than me having to top it up (this isn't a contract, I only pay
for what I use), so I'd like something like that again, or a very cheap line
rental.

Thanks,

Grendel.

SE K700 has radio/mp3/bt and tri band. Also a good Java 3d engine if you
like games.

The d500 relies on its own internal memory so limited to the number of mp3's
you can put on it, no memory card.

How about the Nokia 6230 or 6230i when it gets released.

How about the Nokia 3230?

http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,6771,65363,00.html

Not sure it's widely available yet though - it's "Out of stock" on
Orange contracr and "Coming soon" on Orange PAYG on Orange's web site.

Doesn't seem to have a radio, though.

OK. Must have missed that bit. DAB would've been nice
as well.

You're asking a lot!  What would the battery life be like if it had DAB...

Well, seeing as the new Nokia N91 has a 4GB hard drive in it - I'm sure
people are going to find lower battery life a common thing in the future
(either that or some wonder-battery is being developed - strange that
Nokia shelved their fuel cell plans for now).

Not bothered too much about battery life: I am never more than 2 hours
from being able to recharge the phone (or run it straight from mains
or car battery, when staying in a hotel/caravan for example, which
I do a lot). I remember when I had to charge my original Orange Nokia
in an in-desk charger whenever I came back from a half-hour walk somewhere.
That wasn't a problem then and isn't now.

You're asking for way too much for 'cheap' anyway, think you should
establish what you need and then state a price range. Make it realistic at
least.

Hold on, I didn't mention DAB and I'm not actually too bothered by not
having radio.  I would go for a 3230, but everyone and his wife has one
where I work!  ;)

A minor point BTW - I'm guessing by Orange OVP you're talking about
their Virgin equiv plan as you pay no line rental, only your calls/texts
etc.  This is a actually a contract in Orange's eyes, and when signed up
to it, you're still tied to a 12 month contract, although you pay no
line rental, and I think its been ring-fenced for a while now, so I
guess you're out of your 12 month tie-in.

Thinking about it though - if they charge you your remaining line-rental
when you want to end your contract early, you'd be paying nothing!  I
guess they took that into account when the priced the phones for OVP
Virgin, as when I took mine out, I paid AFAIK full price for the phone.

Yes, it is the contract without line rental deal, that unfortunately they
don't do anymore.  I got a really good deal when I bought my Nokia 3210 on
it years and years ago.  But now they want me to pay full price for a 'phone
:(.  That works out more expensive than even getting a normal contract with
no cash back deal or anything!

Same here - in the end I kept the old contract going (costs nothing) and
got a new one with a new number.  This new contract expires in 12
months, I may switch back to using the free line rental one then.
Disconnecting the old one (or converting it to PAYG and then back to a
new contract after 90 days etc) would have left me with no fallback
should in 12 months there be no good deals around.  The OVP Virgin seems
to be a valued thing these days.

Comes down to how much you want to keep your number.
