Hi all
Just got (Yesterday) one of these on 3 from CPW and it has the latest
firmware (4.03.18 - 04/03/05). However the band selection menu has
been disabled and there is only dual mode as an option. If I could get
it flashed with a generic firmware would that enable the full menu
options.

Nope, and at the moment (and for the foreseeable future) there's no easy way
to get it doen.

do you mean no it doesnt enable that menu or no I can't get it flashed
with a generic virsion as I have had three phones flashed with generic
firmware by a nokia servcie centre.

No, it doesn't enable the menu as it isn't held in the standard flash area.
You can get it flashed both in an official service centre, and at unofficial
ones (like us) but an official service centre won't (or shouldn't - some
will) flash standard firmware to a branded handset, and neither of us can
unlock the phone.  The new BB5 Nokia platform is proving to be a real
headache, and an unlocking solution looks to be a long way off for the
moment.

thats really bad news. after the number of dropped calls today whilst
i had a full 3g signal I thought I could use the band menu to solve
this problem but it looks like I can't. think it may be going back to
CPW but not sure what else to get instead....

Sorry I couldn't help anymore Chris.  Unfortunately the new BB5 platform is
being used for all new Nokias, so it might be a good idea to start looking
at alternate manufacturers until a decent solution is released that can
handle them properly.

does that mean that when the phone can be unlocked by '3' after the
contract ends the band menu will still be locked?

I'm afraid that's exactly what it means.

well I have sorted the band selection menu and can now select between
dual mode - gsm - or wcdma and as for the minimal 3 branding I have
got it sorted so it won't be going back after all....

How did you manage to sort the network mode menu Chris?

seems like I have generated some interest on this one.....

When i asked the question on this newsgroup I also asked on the 3g
forum and one of the moderators came up trumps with the net monitor
and he even has it on his yahoo group for download. I was a bit
dubious as I had used net mon before on the older Nokia's but I didnt
know it was available fro the series 60 platform. It shows all the
usual signal level, channel number etc etc but if you follow the
instructions supplied you are presented with a menu ( Force protocol
between GSM and WCDMA) that gives you the option of selecting Dual -
GSM - WCDMA. The phone does a reboot and after about 30 seconds you
are on GSM (2.5G O2)
If you then go to the usual network menu (tools - settings - network)
you will see that GSM is displayed. Selecting this shows that the
usual Dual mode is NOT now selected. You can go back to dual mode by
either going thro' net mon again and selecting dual or you can select
it in the network menu (this will also reboot the phone).

try this link....
