In order of priority:

1. Outstanding reception capability
2. Robust
3. Very long battery life
4. Small and light (optionally - thin would be good)
5. Use fully without removing protective case (no flip/slide)
6. Other than voice, SMS and WAP, I don't care/need/want anything else

Upgrading from Nokia 7110 on Orange contract, but may consider other
networks if the phone is worth it. Money no object.

I have already considered the Moto V3, but I'm not sure how well it fits
the above requirements (other than point 4).

TIA.

And the V3 is a clamshell too, so point 5 kills it. Pity.

Have a look at the Motorola V8 when it comes out.  Basically a flat
candy-bar format V3.

Apart from point 4, a 6310i sounds as though it would be ideal for you (the
trick is going to be finding one seeing as they've been discontinued for
some time).

The V3 whilst being a very good phone certainly hasn't got stunning battery
life and with being a clamshell would probably be ruled out by point 5
unless you get a replacement case for it.

The new Nokia 6021 is a decent phone.  It will never be a classic like
the 6310i, but it's refreshingly free from much of the non-business crap
that you get with most phones now.  But like the 6310i I'm not sure how
it fits into your view of "4. Small and light (optionally - thin would
be good)"...

Well there's always eBay, but then according to this:

http://www.mobile-phones-uk.org.uk/nokia-6310i.htm

"there are persistent reports of reliability and reception problems
  with this phone."

If that's the case ... no way.

I wonder if you get protective cases that flip open with the phone, i.e.
- clamshell cases, and aftermarket extended-life batteries for the V3?

It might have been in the early days of the 6310i, but I and many others
have been running them for years with no problems whatsoever.  I've always
found it to be one of the best phones ever made.

You can get cases that open with the flip, but they don't cover 100% of the
phone.  Extended batteries I haven't seen many of.  There are some sellers
on eBay claiming extended life, but I'd be inclined to take their claims
with a pinch of salt.

That certainly isn't my experience with this phone nor that of a
Nokia service centre I know.  There were some issues with very early
firmware, mainly to do with Bluetoooth, but that apart it is a
reliable and well thought of device.

It's drivel
The 6310i is / was Nokias most reliable phone, ever.

Standard 1200mAh battery will give you well over a week standby.

(and if you add the optional 3000mAh battery, longest standby
/ talk time of any phone ever, or in the near future, made)

None of any of mine, or any of my friends, have ever needed repair.

(Firmware update under club Nokia guarantee, if pre Ver 5.xx)
