will an English triband phone work in Australia and/or new Zealand ? or does
it need other qualities other than just being triband?

UK Dualband , Triband , Quadband phones that are unlocked will work in
Australia and Newzealand.

Yes it will, but a triband phone for AUS/NZ is not necessary. Dual band
is the best you can get there.
