Just received a message with the sender as something like *1).

It then automatically started a GPRS download, tough I thought I'd disabled
anything from automatically being downloaded, obviously not.

Can't see what has been downloaded, or who was the real sender, however I have
been charged 1 pence 'Enhanced WAP' on my Virgin account, not a huge amount I
know, but that's not the point.

Anyone have any ideas where this would come from and what it would be?

I haven't got a clue where it came from, but I do know that three
members of my family all received picture messages with the title "Try
this!". No number was available and the sender was listed as "*".

Very strange!

I got this too but it was a wap push message not a picture message.
I just deleted it, rather than follow the link.

Was anyone curious enough to follow it?

don't you mean, stupid enough to follow it? Who follows a message from
someone they don't know? Don't they read the phone manual which says "DO NOT
OPEN MESSAGES FROM UNTRUSTWORTHY SOURCES". Then these exact same people take
their phones back to the shop and ask for a new one, duh!!!

If I don't know who the message is from, I just delete it.  However this one
automatically started a GPRS download, even though I was sure auto everything
was switched off, and now having checked everything auto I could change was
switched off, yet it still managed to download a 7kb file without me allowing.

I suspect that this is down to the whatever-it-was masquerading as a
picture message. As picture messaging is normally used for pictures,
which should be harmless, there is no good reason (in the phone
designer's minds, anyway) not to download one. In fact on my T610 Virgin
have configured picture messaging to use a separate data account from
WAP, so disabling WAP won't actually disable picture message downloads.
Perhaps the workaround is to delete the picture messaging config, if you
don't use picture messaging that is?

You have to have wap push set to "prompt" or "never".
