This is for my mum :)
We got her an Orange phone last year, SET610 which suits her nicely, but...
no signal on Orange downstairs in our house. It's rather problematic!
(Especially when she has a broken leg).
Have now found somewhere who will unlock the phone locally, but which
network do we go for? I'm thinking Virgin Mobile or Vodafone (as this is
now my network), but not sure...
Requirements:
Credit mustn't have a "use by" date - she uses £10 in maybe six months.
Decent signal in house (Virgin, Voda, T Mobile, O2)
Good texting rates as this is what it is primarily used for (but can rule
out O2s free text offers as they won't be much use in this situation)
Any advice? :)

I have heard good things about "Tesco Value" PAYG. I don't know
whether it fits your specific requirements.

I'll investigate :) She'll probably disagree on principle though, being a
Sainsbury's employee... ;)

We have a similar setup, as my wife uses a Tesco SIM but works for Asda.

Nevertheless, a Tesco Value SIM is good 'value', 15ppm to any mobile network
/ land line at all times of day - It uses O2's network which in general
works better indoors (as with voda), than Orange / 1-2-1, although clearly
this depends on where abouts you are w.r.t. the transmitter

Thanks everyone for the idea, hadn't thought of it myself. Tesco seems to
be the general consensus - can they be picked up in store? (Tesco megastore
in the same town as the phone unlocking place ;))

Have a look at Tesco Value SIM, Tesco is on O2 so you should have cover OK.
Buy online and you get a card and £10 credit for about £7.50

Doesn't matter, still looks about the ticket so I've ordered one :) Can add
credit later. Do you get any on the sim at all or not?

Do a manual network search, and see which order the networks are
listed.
The home network will be first (if visible) and the rest are listed in
signal strength order.
If necessary, borrow a different sim to do the search.
