Just had a strange text message from Vodafone, on my 'pay as you talk'
service. It basically appears to come from vodafone and says 'In 24 hours
we will send you a free text messagewith new settings for your mobile.
Select 'options', View and Save. If asked for a PIN, use ****. To activate
select YES.
Is this genuine, or a con from someone trying to get me to sign up to
something? Anyone else had these messages, are they genuine and whats it
all about?
Thanks

Why not ring Vodafone and ask?

Last time I called them to try and sort a simple problem, I got no sense out
of them. I thought this newsgroup would have some sensible people, but it
seems not, up to now : (
I thought that asking in here would be a better option. Isn't that what a
newsgroup is intended for? 'asking the odd question or two'
I assumed there would be someone who reads this group who was a bit more
up-to-date with current activities at vodafone and might just know what the
message is all about........
Or perhaps not... As the case may be.

FWIW my wife just got the message too, but deleted it before taking it all
in. She assumed it was new settings for WAP etc.

Dave,
I think you'll find it is a SIM update. I received similar, on my PAYGO and
contract phone. I was quite surprised too, as I didn't think Vodafone did
this, but I was aware that Orange do.
If it is the same as I received, then it updates the "Vodafone" SIM menu
links.
You could of course "try" 191 (from your mobile), but you'll probably
confuse them! :-(
Cheers
PS/ I agree, this is a newsgroup for sharing and obtaining information.

This is not SIM update. SIM updates on Vodafone send a message to confirm
that changes have been made (not that they are about to be made).

If it's anything like Orange or Virgin they won't have a clue anyway, and
you'll be down the cost of an expensive call for no result.

SOunds like some new WAP settings. I doubt it's genuine as Vodafone
would have no need to change their customer's settings en masse.

I had a Voda SIM update about 3 weeks on contract. May be it's that time for
PAYG

A SIM update doesn't require the user to input any PIN. It's definitely
rogue WAP settings, almost certainly causing the phone to dial a premium
rate number next time WAP is accessed.

Interesting, how does the "rogue WAP settings" know what phone it needs to
reconfigure?

It doesn't, but nearly all Nokia's will use the same settings. It's not
targetted, it's quite random.

its proberly somebody else trying to send the WAP/GPRS and MMS settings to
there phone via the Vodafone website and have mistakingly put a digit in
wrong when asked for 4 the phone number and you received it by mistake... if
your phone is working fine and all Wap/'GPRS/MMS is fine then if you do
receive the text update just delete it..

For what it's worth I got the "in 24 hours..." message which I read and
deleted. The following day I was sent new settings. I had the option to
read/install/delete. I read and then deleted as I am satisfied with the
settings already in use. I don't know why Vodafone needed to send me new
settings and if they were so vital why they felt the need to warn me
either. I also got a MMS telling me about MMS. I used the option of
sending a free text "stop MMS" and hopefully that will be the last one of
those I see.

I just spoke to someone at Vodafone. These messages ARE in fact legitimate.
they are updating WAP and GPRS settings on handsets which are not configured
correctly.
I suggest accepting them if unless you know that your WAP/GPRS is working
correctly.
