O2 has been having a bit of a bad day today. I had several problems
logging in earlier: after a long pause I kept getting a message saying
my username and password were incorrect. :(
Anyway, is this the first O2 bill you've tried to look at online? If
so, perhaps your O2 account and mobile number haven't been linked.
Unfortunately I have no idea how you do this because it's been several
years since I went through the process.
It is possible to set up an O2 web account without having an O2 SIM.
Such an account can be used for sending free SMS and email from their
website. From what you say, it appears that's the type of account you
have.

Finally found the error: O2 had set up my monthly bill with a login that
I had not been notified about.
Hopefully all okay now.

Didn't they send you a text? I received my userid and password in separate texts
when my SIM was activated. Not that I needed them as it was setup using the
same userid/password I created when I bought the phone/contract from their
online shop.

I was told to create a login but "somehow" this never got linked to my
Sim/Contract account. Was always wondering why I could never see
anything about my minutes and all that. ;-)
