Ring vodafone, select the "i am thinking about leaving " option from the
menu, ask for your PAC code. Takes about 4 days to arrive. In the mantime
get your new contract. When the PAC code arrives (by letter), ring O2 with
it, takes about 5 days before the switch-over. Your Vodafone contract will
finish when the PAC is activates or the end of your 12 months whichever is
the later.

The issue of a PAC will cancel any notice given to terminate the
contract. If the PAC is not used within 30 days then the Voda service
will continue until either:
a) new notice to terminate the contract is given
or
b) a new PAC is issued and used.

I'm fairly sure this is wrong. If you're porting to Orange or T-Mobile,
the procedure is as above, but AFAIK if you're porting to O2 or
Vodafone then you need to provide the PAC *at the time you sign the
contract*.
BTW, does anyone know whether 3 have fixed the daft porting bug where
people who transfer non-3 numbers can't use them for video calls?

Yep - you *must* have your PAC code *before* porting over to O2!

1. Phone vodafone, ask for PAC 9this will take 48 hours and be sent by
letter)
2. Go to phone shop, buy new phone. At time of purchase state you wish
to port in, give PAC and port-in number to new phone seller.
3. do nothing else don't contact vodafone again, just sit back and let
it all happen.

It might be different, as the two cases I refer to are just pure
cancellations - no porting. Here, Vodafone insist upon a letter detailing
your intention to cancel, and it's considered 30 days notice. This means
that, if you cancel five days before your 12 months are up, you will still
be paying for 25 days outside your contract :\
As I said though, not sure if the above is true with porting your number :)

Hi,
Just to clear up the difference between a cancellation letter and a PAC
request.
If you want to cancel or switch over to pay as you talk on Vodafone
then 30 days notice is required. As Sprite says even if you make your
request 5 days before the end of a twelve month contract then you will
still be billed for an extra 25 days (the contract continues to role
after the agreed commitment ends unless action is taken, e.g.
cancellation, a port or an upgrade). To cancel Vodafone do require
written or faxed notice including a signature to be sent in to customer
services. They then put you in a cancellation diary 30 days from the
point of receiving the fax / letter. If you're still in your contract
commitment period you will receive a letter advising you of this, and
instructions of how to confirm that you accept the shortfall (if you
advise that you're willing to except the shortfall in your original
letter this will be actioned without a shortfall letter being sent)
If you want to take your number to another network then you can request
a PAC from customer services. A PAC lasts for 30 days, in this time you
need to pass this on to your new provider, otherwise the code will
expire (it's always possible to request a new PAC at any time). When
the PAC is passed on to your new provider they use this to port the
number out of Vodafone. On the day the number leaves the network the
contract cancels and if you're still in commitment you'll also be
billed for the remainder of your contract as an early termination fee.
If, for example, you sent in a cancellation letter, then request a PAC
on the 20th day (e.g. 10 days before you're set to cancel), Vodafone
will take you out of the termination diary. This is because you now
have a PAC and Vodafone wouldn't want to cancel the number in ten days
time before you've had the chance to use the PAC (in effect, losing
your number). If you then don't use the PAC but still want to cancel,
another 30 days notice would need to be requested.
Hope this helps clear any confusion up. Any questions please let me
know.

Out of interest, what if you decide to cancel 5 days before your 12 months
are up, *and* take your number to a new network? Would you still pay for
the extra 25 days (ie. 30 days notice for 'cancellation') or just the
remaining 5?

The full 30 days.
