I would go for the M3100.
Any of my customers who used to have the SPV M5000 have now upgraded to
the SPV M3100 and are much happier with it.
Issues with the SPV M5000 were:
1) its size.
2) delicate screen - easy to break (one customer of mine got through 3
SPV M5000 before insisting it be replaced with an SPV M3100).
3) twist mechanism prone to going wrong with continual use (cut off
power).
Advantages of SPV M5000 are chiefly its larger screen and higher
resolution - VGA.
M3100, unlike SPV M5000, is also enabled for HSDPA - mine is unlocked
to T-Mobile who already have this up and running. HSDPA is roughly 4 x
3g speed - large email attachments now open in seconds rather than
minutes!

The 3100 has far better battery life and is far more easily pocketable.
It also seems to react quicker when you change the screen orientation
and just "feels" better.
> For people using the M5000 device, how easy is it to use as a phone?
Easy, bit big.

You can use it any way you want to, but if you just want to make a phone
call best way is with the screen folded down in the closed position as
the earpiece is on the outside of the top section, and not just above
the screen as you might think.
> Any advice would help me make a selection.
Get the 3100.

Hi,
Thanks for the advice. One other thing, on the M5000, if it is closed,
does it have any external alerts (LEDs lite or anything) to tell you
that you have missed a call/received email/received an SMS?
