Do I have to buy a special cable to do it online?
I keep hearing mention of "cruiser" and the like...

You can use the USB grey cable that came with your phone! Yippeee! You
download the 'davinci' application, and download files from their server,
then write them to the flash on your phone. It's mainly automated, but it's
good to read first and get familar with the interface, it's pretty easy to
be honest.
You can actually use SEUS (sony ericsson update service) to download an
official sony ericsson application that will update your firmware on your
phone to the latest one available, BUT of course in your situation you will
just be upgrading a branded firmware, so it will still place the latest
available branded firmware (that your network provides) on your phone, not
solving anything!

Yes cruiser will do it - but a bit too expensive for a single handset
Best to stick with Davinci if you DIY
