Hi folks, first time poster here (at least in this group).
I've been asked a question as a result of a meeting with one of our
subsidiaries in Spain. Apparently out there they have a high-priority
option (may be called "red box", our guy wasn't sure of that), which
has "guaranteed" delivery. He says they use this service for
high-priority alarm messages (this is life-critical stuff - strikes me
as rather foolish using SMS for that, but that's just my opinion based
on UK experience with SMS services).
I've been asked if any provider in the UK offers a similar service.
I've turned up nothing after several hours of searching, and wondered
if anyone on here knew of such a service.
<thinks>
next time if someone asks me if I want to go on a jolly to Madrid, the
correct answer would be "yes", at least I wouldn't end up doing this
kind of fools errand with only half the required information. Curse my
fear of flying.
</thinks>

SMS cannot be guaranteed. What if the receiving device breaks down?

True, but reliability can be improved be means such as having urgent
messages pass though a dedicated, closely-monitored SMSC with frequent
retrying; some means of escalation such as an alternative delivery
address, alternative routing if passing through peering networks or
even human intervention or even a phone call if delivery is delayed.
Can't see I've ever seen such a system, though.
