Okay, it's upgrade time but out of the following two phones which is the best bet? Nokia N73 or Sony Ericsson K800i I currently have the Nokia N70 which is a great little phone. As I understand it the K800i has a better camera and is faster. But the N73 has the Symbian operating system so I'm really torn. I use my current Nokia to mainly make phone calls, but also check my e-mail on a POP3 account, occasionally do a little web browsing and take photos, when I remember I have a camera phone! I don't really have any Symbian applications that I use, although I have got the odd free game. Just the thought of having it even if I never use it appeals. I think I could live without it if the K800i was that much better as a phone. Can the K800i do all the things I want or should I stick to a trusted Nokia phone? People I have spoken to recommend the K800i, but they have all been Sony Ericsson users to start with so I consider them to be biased. What about connection to a PC, the Nokia is easy with Bluetooth and the sync software. How does the K800i shape up in this department for calender and contact synchronisation? Is there another phone I should be considering that is better than both these models? Please advise.... There are some great 3rd party applications for this phone if you only go out and look for them. Symbian v3 is rather new so there aren't as many applications available as is for the Symbian v2. I'm very happy with my phone and I'm quite fussy. You compare the screen size to the K750i (i know its old) and its laughable. I haven't held the K800i, but find the connectivity support for Nokia to be far superior to my g/f's K750i. But what do you want to do? People scoff and laugh at me and ask me why I'd want a Nokia N80. They say "I already have a music player" or "I already have a big camera" or "I already have a GPS Unit" and I laugh at them and say, "yeah, well, I got all your ten devices in one". Then they just reiterate the same nonsense about "ha you're so lame, why do you want to check email when you're out. I'd rather use a pc" or "Why do I want GPS on my phone when I already got GPS" and I remind them about theft from cars, and the fact that everybody usually takes their phone with them, not their laptop, so i can always check my email, wherever I am, and because I take the phone with me,I always have a camera if Im in an accident. The retort is "well, I keep a spare camera in the glovebox". yawn. Off the beaten track. I guess what Im saying, you can always find an application for symbian. You got your GPS, your word viewers, your PDF viewers, your "notepad" your voice recorder, your games, your outlook active sync etc. You can play music, play videos when you're bored and trapped somewhere with no tv... (i'd rather watch tv on a big screen - yeah, well, when you don't have a big screen and bored to tears, I know i'll be happy) As for the camera on the N73, it's pretty good actually. It's only 3 Megapixel, but it beats the sh.t out of my 3 Megapixel N80! Something to do with Carl Zeiss optics I reckon. But they're pretty good. Sound wise, although it's got "stereo speakers", four of the smeggers, the sound doesn't seem as impressive as my N80. So. Depends what you want to do. Plus the N73 can also act as an external hard drive, IIRC, just plug it in to a USB port and activate data transfer. Hey presto, no more PC Suite! Hey presto, no more PC Suite! Yeah, I've read a couple of reviews on the N73 and I'm pretty much sold on it. Just depends what sort of upgrade price Orange will offer, can't get an upgrade price of the internet because it's showing "out of stock". It's free on new contracts, but they aren't going to give it away to existing customers. I would be reasonably happy to stick with my N70 for a while, although if Vodafone or O2 have any good offers I wouldn't mind switching to a new contract, I currently pay about £25 per month. > PPS You could wait for the Nokia N95. Missed the line that said you check your email, do a little web browsing and take pictures... Late night. Bad eyes. It's debatable I think whether the K800i or N73 has a better camera. Personally, it looks like they both have their good points. Blows the N70 out of the water. Blows the N80 out of the water if it weren't for the sound quality or lack of wifi - and if you get it on O2, lack of memory card! But it's got a nice big screen and its not a slidy thingy, which makes it more robust in my opinion. My slider is already becoming a bit wobbly. Pff. Nokia. >> PPS You could wait for the Nokia N95. You mean just because it's got a 5 Megapixel camera, audio controls, wifi, and gps? Yeah. Could be right. I hope it's not released for another year, then hopefully I can get one :-) I was hoping for an N92 myself. Probably better trying one; I found the k800i better than the N73 in terms of what I wanted to use it for, and the UI isn't slow at all. Nseries are all symbian, and thus pretty slow. One may be less slow than another, but still, slowwww! If you don't need powerpoint/word applications, and let's face it, only the budding business person *really* does, then go try both in a shop in your hand, and see what you think. Sony UI is slightly different from Nokias, so give it a while. |
