Updating N70 FW after contract

Is it possible to update an N70 with generic Nokia FW once your contract
is up?
Tried the online update a short while ago and no updates (v2.0539.1.2)
19-10-05 RM84 for this 3 phone.

You have a 2yr warranty on it, take it to a service centre and ask.

I have flashed my N70 with firmware from the Nokia site to remove the
Orange homescreen. Don't know if this will work on a 3 phone, my
firmware version is now 5.0616.2.0.3 24-04-06 RM84. Just had to use the
USB cable and the Nokia software updater, it was all very straight
forward and painless.
