Is it possible to get a PAYG plan with BT Mobile?  I find nothing like
that offered on their web site and wonder whether there was some less
direct way, say through resellers, to get one.

No . BT offer a stand alone mobile service. CPW used to sell it, I've
not seen it advertised for ages.

Why do you want a payg service with them out of interest.

I'd like to take advantage of the better Openzone tariff that is available
with a BT Mobile service: http://www.btopenzone.com/buy/pricing_plans.jsp
I am now on their 250 minutes for £10pcm and would like to change to 500
minutes for £5pcm.
