I have been trying to get the bloody thing to connect via a SE K700 to
pick up emails.  It just dosent work.  I know the ir port of both
machines work as i uploaded my contacts from the K700 to the psion via
the ir port when i first got it two weeks ago.

Any one reading this group that uses "modern day" phone to connect to
the internet/email?

Thanks

I assume you have set up the SE to log onto the web......using SE's
intelligent web setup assistant.

I sometimes use my Treo 600 via IR to my W800i and unlike Nokia's where its
just *99# to connect directly to GPRS WAP, for SE phones you need to state
the External ID. So you have to look on your SE data accounts and see what
number it is and put that in the Treo. I have to use *99***2# where the 2 is
the External ID for Data Account O2 WAP GPRS.

Hope that makes sense, I'll had a long day.

It's a while since I used my 5mx with my 6310i - it fell into disuse 9 or 10
months ago although it remains sat on the desk in front of me. So, my
knowledge might be a little rusty, but what's your symptoms?

I have followed a guides on the internet to set the phone up (Sony
Ericsson K700), when i try to send email from the 5mx i get the
following error.

Program Closed
Program Main
Reason Code KERN-EXEC
Reason Number 0

I am at the stage where I amd going to back up the data files to Cf card
and do a hard reset then try again.

As it has only been about two weeks since I got the 5mx and I have gone
overboard with the stuff installed and removed in those 2 weeks.

Quick instinctive response is to try a soft-reset (bent-out paperclip in the
reset socket) as this rings a vague bell with me. All you'll lose by doing
this is any unsaved data. If this fails, I'll have a more considered think
back.

I also recall some fun when you tried to use the email or web application
before establishing the connection through the modem control panel? I had to
get the connection first before firing up the app that was going to be using
it.

Does this make any difference? If needs be, I can easily fire up my 5mx and
have a play as I'm sure I've come across this error message before.

I'm posting this via a laptop, a SonyEricsson T610 connected by
Bluetooth, and Orange PAYG's £1 a day Internet access.

I seem to recall that there was an updated file called the "Mobile
Connectivity Update". Have you installed this to your 5MX? I may still have
it archived somewhere, if I have I'll email it to you.

I did manage to connect my Nokia 6310i to my 5MX quite successfully, but
I've no experience of SE I'm afraid.

In the meantime check this out...

OK here we go:
I have tried a soft reset still no joy.
I have installed the ir update still no joy.
I have tried to connect before i try to send emails or surf the net but
still no joy.

Every time I try to send an email I get KERN-EXEC message as an error.

The way things are going I am destind to just use this as a glorified
electronic organiser not the high power hand held computer it really is :(

The next thing will be for me to fire up my kit and try to replicate this,
but.... A Java error is another possibility, i.e. something dud within the
"web" program's cache. Try clearing out the cache, then reloading something
text-only like Google?

Yeah, I know this suggestion is aimed at the web browser and your problem is
with the mail application, but I learned a couple of years ago that the data
connectivity on the 5mx - whilst being mightily powerful - had some odd
quirks when you least expected them.

tested trusty Nokia 8310.  Set it up as instructions on links given
here and guess what?

I bloody works, first time I can surf and collect email...Thank you all
who came to my aid, with advice and surgestions.

Now my search is on to sell my SE K700 and get a trusty Nokia of
sutible vintage, 6210, 6310, 8310, 7650 or even a 7210.

Good to know it's all sorted in the end

www.nokia6310i.co.uk might be worth a punt? All my spares (2 in total) came
from private sales, but this seems as good a source as any. There's a few
refurb-sellers in the trade press too.

Assuming of course, that this is the phone you want to go for - it's
probably going to be one of the easier ones to find a fair example of.

In the end I gave the Psion 5mx to the wife and got myself a Treo 600,
one unit now and no great problems to get emails or surf the net.

Merry Christmas
