My new car has an in-dash slot for a SIM card, I'd like to be reachable
on my mobile or my car phone and 2 SIMS seems to be the best option for
me. However, I don't have an ideal solution at present and would like
to confirm my current understanding and seek options. I currently have
a Vodafone contract phone.
- Vodafone multiSIM will not support 3G/GPRS as far as I know (I do a
lot of mobile browing)
- Vodafone tell me that multiSIM would require a new contract (I'm not
due for renewal)
- Vodafone PAYG and O2 PAYG do not allow call forwarding to any number
other than voicemail
The partial solution I have so far is to use a Vodafone PAYG SIM in the
car with the following forwarding in place:
- Handset/contract number set to forward to car/PAYG number when
unobtainable
- Car/PAYG number voicemail switched on
When I get into the car, I switch my handset to offline mode (i.e.
unobtainable) so that calls go to the car. However, I am in a very poor
reception area at home, so even when I want to be obtainable, I'm not.
If I'm at home and out of the car calls therefore wind up on the
car/PAYG voicemail. I ideally wanted to call forward this number on
busy/no answer/unobtainable back to my handset/contract voicemailbox.
Flaws
- I need to switch handset between off and online when entering and
leaving the car
- I now have 2 voicemailboxes to manage
- SMS are not forwarded, so while in the car I don't receive text
Nowhere near as nice as my old bluetooth carkit :-(
Ideally I would have a clone of my current contract SIM in the car, but
this doesn't seem possible. The only other options that I can see are:
- get a contract (or Fresh) SIM for the car which will allow
forwarding (still no SMS in car and need to switch on and off)
- get a multiSIM and live without GPRS/3G (not really an option)
- use YAC or another personal numbering service to manage 2 SIMs (not
an option - new number)
- fit a bluetooth carkit and ignore the inbuilt one :-)
Hope all that is clear-ish.....
Any comments or suggestions welcomed

There is supposed to be SIM you can buy that copies your original SIM.
Its called a Super Sim (do a search on EBAY etc).
Only works on GSM though but is an option.
Only one of the phones can be switched on at any one time though as both
will be trying to register on the network at any one time.

This will not work on Vodafone cards, they cannot be copied

I'm not sure if you'd consider moving networks or whether "Single Number" is
what you're after, but the only thing I can see that SN doesn't do, is
forward your SMS. These will always be sent to your "Primary Device":

you might want to go look at http://web2.yac.com/jsp1/yacNo.jsp - they
have a "free" service that includes hunting or find me options.
