Hi,

I'm searching for a way to use SIP over Wi-Fi with a GSM/Wi-Fi UMA phone
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unlicensed_Mobile_Access .

It's a packaged Nokia 6136 (with apparently a Symbian S40 OS), so
everything is routed by the carrier, but I'd like to take control of it
so that I can use SIP over Wi-Fi.

UMA is generally presented versus SIP, but it seems that UMA is a
supplementary layer which allows to use SIP :

"[...] UMA is an access layer technology that enables mobile services
(included SIP-based services) to be accessed over broadband/Wi-Fi". -
http://www.umatoday.com/faq.php

Would there be a way to /flash/ the phone and to control Wi-Fi
communications ?

Thanks.

Hi,

Nokia 6136 supports UMA with one phone number and cellular & WLAN
handovers, but it does not support free WLAN access. It is controlled
by operators.

Hi,

As the other poster says, the Wifi/UMA on the 3136 is controlled by the
network operators at the moment.

If you still want to use VoIP over WiFi on a mobile handset, take a
look at Nokia's E series business handets. They have WiFi and a built
in SIP client.

You can't hand over from Wifi to GSM mid-call but you can still make
calls over either transport depending on what's available.

aql's Nokia E series VoIP service allows you to make calls over VoIP
while having your mobile number presented as the caller ID. Also, calls
to your mobile number from other users of their VoIP service will be
routed over Wifi or GSM according to whether you've got Wifi coverage
or not.

Cheers,

James
