Looking for a cheap GPS Receiver to work with my Nokai N73 and TomTom6
software. Seen a few cheap ones on ebay like the Holox and Holux ones, but
would like someone else opinion.

Thanks in advance

TomTom6 sucks on the N73. Don't bother.

Yup. The main screens and menus etc aren't too bad, and it isn't too bad
when you are planning a route. But the entire screen freezes whenever it's
reading out a verbal instruction, thats if it actually unfreezes after,
which it often does not.

It's a pity because other than the freezing and the slow speed, it actually
works quite well!

What firmware version you got, googled earlier and some people are saying
V03 is the best to use with TomTom.

V01. I read that V03 solves problems that the phone has with maintaining a
bluetooth connection. I must say, I've never had any problems with the
bluetooth link, it seems fine to me!

No idea how I'd go about getting the phone updated, and not sure if it will
fix the problem.

Nokia Service center will do it for free within the 2yr warranty, just
backup all your data first. Will find them in most town centers. Tomtom 6
working fine and no freezing on my N73.

http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,1522,,00.html?orig=/softwareupdate

But the N73 is not listed yet. Probably will be soon.

No idea what TomTom is like on the N73, but as far as receivers go I'm more
than happy with my Holox BT-321.  Just be careful of the big sellers on eBay
who strip the car charger out of the packaging and then try to sell them to
you as an "extra".  Oh yeah, watch out for the ones that want an additional
£4.50 (or more) for "fast despatch".  If you don't pay it, they threaten to
sit on your order for at least a week until they can be arsed to post it.

Sounds like you've been burned recently?

Just tried my N73 (FW V01) + TomTom6 with a mates TomTom BT Receiver and it
seems to work fine. Took a few minutes to get a signal, we're in a bad gps
spot (connected to 3 sats), but once connected the BT connection, voice,
position, routing etc are spot on.

Will be surfing tonight for my own Receiver. Did notice the other night when
looking at the Holox ones that they all didn't have the car charger. Most
charged for fast delivery (£4-£5) and additional £3 to process within 24hrs
(alternative 5-7 working days), but its ebay you always need to read the
whole advert rather than just look at the bid price and delivery charge (Oh
and look for hidden text within the specifications saying "You are bidding
for a picture of a mobile phone only", mate in work got stung with that
one).

Nope, just aware of the pitfalls.  I ended up buying a Holux and a Holox
unit.  The Holux has the advantage of being a respected brand name and is
widely available.  The Holox (IMO) is way cheaper, far more sensitive with a
quicker start up time but has the disadvantage of generally only being
available from one or two places.

I got a SiRF III GPS receiver from www.mobilefun.co.uk for about 40 quid or
so.  Works very well with my N73 (although takes a few minutes to get a
signal, don't know if thats the receiver or the TomTom software) and seems
to hold is charge pretty well (5+ hours on one journey).

Personally think that TomTom is pretty good on the N73.  I have the latest
firmware and never drops bluetooth connection and hasn't locked up once.
Only thing I can't get working is trying to get it to activate speakerphone
when a call comes in.

Cheers,

J
