i was thinking of a virgin sim - so DD and its almost like a contract as in
no buying time manually ?
i hate the idea of that

I don't quite follow you there.
You say it's a bad idea not to have to top up your phone every once in a
while, a bad idea to have cheaper and wider roaming?
What then is a good idea?

If you have a Virgin PAYG SIM you are on the standard top-up tarrif by
default. You can change to the Direct Debit tarrif if you want to (for
cheaper and more widespread roaming) but you do not have to do so.
However, even on the DD tarrif you can still top-up manually
beforehand, if you wish, so you never need to pay by DD.
