I am currently on O2 with a contract about to expire. (Actually its 2
phones in the same boat!)

Anyway, Ive decided to get a decent PDA phone this time, but am now
struggleing on choice and what the phones will actually do!

I have spoken to O2 about an upgrade. I am currently on a Business
tarrif for my 2 phones and they offered me a deal at first I thought
was OK - but appears they have been less than truthful.

I was looking at the XDA exec phone + a Samsung D900, which they
offered for £179 and 6 months free. effectively meaning the phones are
free - but tied into a 24 month contract.

The tarrif was still the same 250 business, but the minutes doubled by
virtue of the contract length and shared over the 2 phones. 500
minutes a month would be adequate, as between me and the missu, we
rarely go above that.

Anyway, they quoted me £33 per month. I am currently paying £35 for
each phone (albeit with cashback, I am paying zilch at the mo) She
told me I would be paying less than i am now - and it was the best she
could do. However, when I phoned again today, I was told those prices
were plus VAT. I dont appreciate being lied to - so am looking
elsewhere.

Firstly, I am not sure on phone choice. I know the XDA pro is big, but
do like it. The other phone they offered was an XDA mini S.

This is where the dilema starts! I own an Ipaq 5450, so fully aware of
processor speeds etc and facilities on offer. But on these phones I am
clueless! Is there really anything I couldnt do with one or other of
the phones? I know the Exec has 3G - but will that really mean
anything to me in real terms?

So, I would appreciate any real help on choice of phone. Im not
limiting myself to those mentioned....

OK, next to operators and tariffs.

My choice would be O2 - purely because I get best reception at home
with O2 and they give free 0870 usage with included mintues. Having
said that, they are dire for charges for data. It would seem if I was
to actually use it to browse the net, it would cost a fortune on 02.

From what I can see, the T-Mobile web and talk seems to be the best
deal for interent usage. My past experience with them however isnt
that clever. In my home, I would regularly get texts for missed calls,
even though the phone never rang! Im not sure if reception available
with newer phones has improved? (But am sure no new masts have been
put up)

Any suggestions and advice on this area appreciated.

I have seen a decent deal from T-Mobile for their version of the exec
- but it looks a yucky silver and not the nicer looking black of the
O2 version. Are their options or is that the choice?

OK ... thats about the lot.... sorry for the ramble, but there are so
many minefields on this decision!

Forgot to mention - I would also like to use TomTom sat nav - if that
makes any difference?

I may be able to help you on this.

First of all, if you are intending to use a reasonable amount of data,
T-Mobile are unbeatable on data pricing at the moment.

I have the Vario 2 type device, which not only runs at 3g speeds, but
HDSPA (about 4 x faster than 3g at present). Surfing the net is *much*
faster than GPRS - also large email attachments open in seconds rather
than minutes.

However, you will first of all need to check T-Mobile reception in your
house, both non 3g and 3g - non 3g sometimes works where 3g doesn't and
vice-versa (I have a spare 3g phone I could lend you to test this, if
you happen to be in the London area).

If you have to stick with o2, I may be able to help you out on this
also, as, although o2 are the only one of the 4 main operators not to
offer a Vario 2 type device, I have a spare unlocked one, which I could
possibly bundle in as part of the upgrade deal.

Any of my customers formerly with o2 exec type devices have now moved
to vario 2 type devices instead - vario 2 has HSDPA wherease exec does
not, also my customers were always breaking the screen on the exec, or
damaging the twist mechanism. IMO, the exec is simply too big to use as
phone without using bluetooth and too big to comfortably fit in a
pocket.

Feel free to contact me should you wish to discuss further - my email
address is my full name with no dot at my business name dot com.

Incidentally, any figures I quote to businesses are always ex VAT - o2
should have made this clear to you however.
