I'm replacing my ageing toshiba e740 pda, which i currently use mainly as a
sat nav system, but also for connecting to the net via wifi,
I'm after a pda with built in gps.. the latest sirf 3 ones, must have wifi,
run pocket pc 5, able to run tomtom 5 or 6,
Plus (heres where the relevence to this group comes in) i want to replace my
mobile phone, so may as well get a pda with a phone built in, that'd give me
gprs/3G connections when i can't find a cheap/free wifi spot,
I'm looking at the MDA compact 3, which is a re-badged HTC P3300 it seems,
But, i've read a write up saying t-mobile have disabled wifi on the MDA
versions, and it does seem that way, the phone on the t-mobile site makes no
mention of wifi,
yet some other sites do list wifi as a feature (these were european sites)
Does the mda compact 3 have wifi or not?
is it a decent devise?? problems with it,
And what alternatives are there,
I don't mind paying upto £250 for the right devise, but for the phone part i
want a mainly data price plan, which is the best company for this?
I travel abroad a lot, and the call back sim (global one/0044) i used on the
last trip was a pain in the A, 6 out of 10 calls couldent be made, can you
get the mda compact 3 sim free? or the htc p3300 sim free for £250, or on a
contract for that price, i can't seem to find anyone other than O2 selling
the htc with a contract.

Okay, one last chance to make this phone the one i buy, well 2 really, can
the t-mobile customization be hacked to enable wifi, i can't believe they'd
physicaly remove the wifi part when they re-brand the phone from the htc to
mda.
Or a more realistic thing, can a wifi card be used on this phone?
idealy one in the expansion slot (SD/miniSd card) but will one of them fit
in the slot, i know some smart phones they wont as the wifi cards are a
little longer than memory cards, so unless the slot is on an edge of the
phone and not internal, it wont go,
Or can a usb wifi card be used? or is the usb connector not a host connector
to enable that??

Apparently Tmobile have bought a little known model from HTC that
actually does not have Wifi in it, so can not be hacked. There are
apparently two versions produced by HTC.
Memory slot is inside so that is no good for a wireless card either. A
colleague of mine bought one and went through exactly what you have. He
decided to keep it saying that with Web 'n Walk there is probably less
need for it.
