Have Three started to roam onto Orange's 2G network yet, does anyone
know?

Not yet; I believe new customers will start to roam on Orange at the
end of December/early January, with existing customers following later
-- but that is just 'talk' I've read on some forums.

Am I right in thinking that existing customers will always roam onto O2
if required, but that Orange will be the preferred roaming network, and
that new customers from some yet to be determined date will roam onto
Orange only.

Hope this makes sense.

No, existing customers will be transitioned over to Orange over time.

That could lead to some really pissed off customers who get good O2
reception and poor Orange receiption, where there is no three 3G
coverage.

Yes but Three have lots of experience of pissing off customers and know just
what to do about it...

Well that's up to 3 really - they chose to ditch Orange and go with O2.

Conversely there will probably be some really pleased customers who's
phone suddenly starts working in areas where it didn't used to.
