is it possible to do this myself( code input or such like) or am i going
to have to go down the market to see the dodgy geezer! :)

You can put the code in yourself if you have it. Just insert a different
SIM and wait to be prompted for "subsidy code". Getting the code is the
bit you have to pay for.
