A friend says he can buy SIM cards for Orange PAYG for £1.

Maybe that's the price these days but it seems too cheap.

Are these £1 SIMS part of some sort of scam or ripoff?

Sounds like a scam to me, they're usually offered free.

Of course it's no scam.

I expect they're ok. After all, Orange sometimes gives them away for free.
Anything to generate call revenue!

I got one so i could unlock a nokia n80 on orange, paid £1 + put £20 on as
credit so it could be used as the £20 payment for unlocking and was credited
with:

Last Month
300 free texts
£30 free credit to use as and when i wanted + £10 extra as they credited too
much and took some back.
£4 worth of data

This Month

Another 1000 free texts
Another £4 of data usage !

(the remainder of last months free texts and data were cleared when the new
stuff went on)

Not bad for £21 !! - including unlocking a N80 to any network.
(did have to register the sim and phone to me)

It'll get you onto the Orange network for your calls, texts and data,
so yes - it's a ripoff!

£1 for a day of unlimited GPRS usage isn't exactly what I'd call a
rip-off.

It is if you're not going to use that much in a day. The only time I'd be
likely to use GPRS/WAP is to check my email POP3 box if I was expecting an
urgent one. I get the Orange SMS alerts for incoming mail so I'd only need
to do it once I knew the message had arrived. Last time the actual GPRS
connection cost me about 30p. No point in committing yourself to spending
a quid for that.

Fair point.  If I'm just going to use it a little I'll use up some of my
4MB bundle on my ED50 phone. If I'm going to need to hammer it, I'll pay
the quid on my PAYG phone and not worry about how much I use.

Or go for the T-Mobile deal - PAYG pricing but capped at £1 total
cost/day - that way if you use less you pay less!

But you're not meant to use that with a computer. Most of my GPRS is used
by my use of the phone as a modem.

Yep fair point (although thankfully T-Mobile don't appear to have been
too strict at implementing it so far).
