I lost my Motorola V600 so a friend gave me his old Sony Z7e to use
until my contract renewal.  He no longer has the instructions and hasn't
used the phone for a few years.  Neither of us can work out how to add
numbers into text messages.  It will obviously be very simple to do, but
we are both suffering from lapses in common sense.  Any help would be
appreciated.

* or # buttons to switch between letters/numbers, or just press the key
several times, eg for a 2 you would hit the 2 four times a > b > c > 2

One of those methods will probably work.  Alternatively:
