I'm on an Orange pay monthly and I'd like to switch to PAYG also with
Orange.

Can I do this and keep my number?

Does it matter where I buy the SIM?

You shouldn't need to buy a new SIM.  Just get your account switched to
PAYG.

When I did it they sent me a new SIM for free. There are apparently some
minor differences between PAYG and contract SIM cards, it's not simply a
case of a SIM update message.

Maybe it's just for people with old SIMs?  I didn't get a new SIM when
I transferred from contract to PAYG some years ago.

Thanks to everyone. I'll get in touch with Orange CS.

You don't buy a SIM. When giving your notice of termination you ask for
a SIM. It will be posted to you near to the end of your 30-day notice
period, usually day 25 or so. You then ring to register your SIM with
your contract phone number. Job done.
