The shops are right.
If your mate was the original owner, get him to contact the supplying
network for the unlocking code - it's currently the only sensible way to get
them unlocked.

I assume you've already tried your vodafone sim in it and found it not
working... I only ask as it has been mentioned in the past that some
O2 contract phone stock is unlocked as standard.
As has already been mentioned, if it is indeed locked, get your mate
to call O2 and ask for an unlock code.

All contract phones I've had with O2 (all Nokias) have been unlocked as
standard.
