stuck on .wav ringtones on GX20

I want to use .wav files as rigntones, alerts, etc. on my GX20.    I can
record the wavs no problem, download them, copy them across from my pc.  BUT
no matter what I do it always says "Illegal Data" instead of playing the
sound.    The manual says nothing about it.   Cant find any answer on the
web either.   Do I need to use a specific format (sample-rate, mono/stereo,
etc) or am I doing something else wrong?

Please help.?

Thanks!

No, it also supports WAV according to the specs.

That's a pity, because you can't.

You can't use .bmp files as tuning forks either.

Mobile ring tones are almost all in some form of midi, which is a list
of notes to play, whereas a .wav file is a sound recording.

Ok then smartass, tell me why on page 92 of the user manual it clearly
states that you can use the following formats:

(and I quote):

" SWAF -  Sound file in SMAF format
Original ringtone (composed in melody editor)
MIDI - Soundfile in standard MIDI format
IMV - Soundfile in iMelody format
WAV - Soundfile in WAVE format
AMR - Soundfile in AMR format "

And i think you'll find earlier models (GX10i) also supported WAV.
Not to mention other phones (Sony J5e) that use recorded sounds (NOT midi)
as ring tones.

Check your facts.

Sorry, seems that this is one of the few phones that is different
(Nokia Cardphone is another).

I hope you enjoy trying to make it work

However, you're not smartass enough to get it to work? What a pity!

I have no need to "check my facts" - I have no interest in ringtomes
at all.

Thanks but I dont think I will enjoy that.

You're right.  I'm not a smartass.

You should always check your facts before making smartass remarks like "you
cant use .bmp files as tuning forks".

Otherwise you look a total prick.

Better than sounding like an offensive twat.

Did anyone offer to help you with your little problem, by the way?

Only an offensive twat would answer a question with a wrong answer whislt
simultaneously claiming to have no interest in the subject.

I asked an honest question.  Your answer was not only completely WRONG, it
was patronising and INSULTING.  (bmp files as pitchforks indeed).  If you
don't know the answer (which you clearly don't), and you have no interest in
the subject (which you say you don't), then just shut the f.ck up.

One of the few times, maybe the only time I've seen justified abuse on
Usenet.
Well done.

Very kind of you to offer to write an updated version for everyone to
read. I hope that you will be able to finish it soon.

I don't think my answer was necessarily wrong. I am waiting to hear
from someone who has been able to use a wav file on that model of
handset. If I do, I am happy to admit to being wrong.

>whislt

There are lots of things I know about that I have no interest in, and
do not ever intend to research further. I spend several months
typesetting and copyfitting a trolleybus magazine, so I know quite a
bit about trolleybuses. A subject I have absolutely no interest in
whatsoever.

> INSULTING.  (bmp files as pitchforks indeed).

Well, the reason I gave that example is that we have been using bmp
files as tuning forks - to a.ses pitch from a waveform overlaid on a
bmp background. In retrospect, "pitchfork" does sound a little
agricultural: not the thing I had in mind at the time.

BTW, it was a failure: the oscilloscope display moves around too much
to assess tuning.

I had a Sony J70 (successor to the J5e, I believe), and I'm fairly certain
it could't use WAV files as ringtones. It did have a facility that allowed
you to record your own ringtone using the microphone, but there didn't
appear to be any software (at least, none that I knew of) that allowed you
to upload a WAV file to it.

I know that the Samsung SGH-T100 (the phone I have now, before my shiny new
pre-ordered Panasonic X70 arrives in the post next week hopefully [or
whenever it's released, at least!]) can be made to play WAV files as
ringtones, but I'm not sure exaclty how it's done. Somehow the WAV file is
transposed over a MIDI track, which is then converted into a MMF file, and
it works.... but I've not done it myself, only seen files already created by
other people.

Yes, I have a J70, and although it can record ringtones through the
microphone, it cannot accept wav files from elsewhere. I was amazed to
be told that its predecessor can, but the OP obviously is an expert on
the subject, ever though he is wrong.

I never said the J5e could accept WAV files.  I said it used recorded sounds
(as opposed to MIDI).

" Not to mention other phones (Sony J5e) that use recorded sounds (NOT midi)

Reading is fundamental.

I am replying to your query that read:

Seems to me that you explicitly mentioned .wav files

Oh for f.cks sake.  YES I mentioned wav files - if you want another example
try the subject line of this thread.

What's your point?

I was replying to your statement below:

I never said that "its predecessor can".   And I never claimed to be an
"expert on the subject", if I thought myself an expert do you think I'd have
posted a question asking how to do something?

You're making such a dick of yourself, I'd stop now if I were you.

I have just been given a Motorola C350 for my birthday.  Has anyone any
views (pros and cons) about this phone.

Thanks.

you can have WAV sounds, but not as ringtones.
If you want a WAv as a ringtone, you will have to convert it to a SMAF file.

Download "WSC-MA2-SMAF (Ring Voice)" from
http://smaf-yamaha.com/tools/downloads.html

The WAV that you are converting to SMAF with this program must be 16 bit
mono, so convert with sound recorder if you have to.

and then transfer to the phone.

I think thats it.

Finally... a constructive and helpful answer!

Just what I needed... Thanks Ed.   :o)
